We’re a young organization, currently seeking a part-time Staff Accountant to work on our clients' internal accounting. The Staff Accountant will primarily work remotely for about 20 hours per week to start and will report to the Managing Director. The position is ideal for those established in their accounting careers and are interested in rewarding work. There is a strong potential to grow into more hours and more responsibility as our organization grows.

Additionally, our ideal candidate should have experience working in a nonprofit accounting role and will come with a strong desire to learn and grow with the organization.

Position Description:


The Staff Accountant will act as the point of contact with client staff and is responsible for assisting with all aspects of our client’s financial sustainability. Reporting to Green Owl’s Managing Director, this position will support revenues, expenses, GL maintenance, payroll, and work collaboratively with Green Owl and client staff to ensure that all accounts and records are maintained and monitored.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Enter expense and revenue details into our clients’ accounting system, including but not limited to accounts payable, pledges, credit card receipts, and other payments

  • Process payments for clients' staff, contractors, and vendors as needed

  • Maintain GL accounts and custom reports in the accounting system, including periodic reviews of the financial statements to ensure accuracy

  • Assist with grant budgeting and reporting as needed

  • Assist with clients' cash flow tracking and management

  • Assist with creating and refining clients' financial & operational policies and procedures and provide an ongoing evaluation of internal controls

  • Liaise with clients' external CPA firm

  • Assist clients and other Green Owl staff with day-to-day financial questions

  • Participate in Green Owl racial equity work

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of experience in an accounting role

  • Successful completion of accounting coursework and proven familiarity with intermediate accounting functions

  • Experience with and knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting

  • Interest in and enthusiasm for financial management and, more importantly, a passion for social and environmental good

  • Ability to maintain financial accuracy and to work to deadlines

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information

  • A willingness to engage in ongoing racial equity work

  • Desire to learn and grow with the organization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or other business field

  • Knowledge of Xero, QuickBooks Online, or comparable software

  • Experience using Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office

  • Ability to manage a project from inception to completion

  • Self-starter, ability to work independently

  • Interest in and ability to organize efficient systems

Additional Details:


The Staff Accountant will work remotely and will have the ability to set their own schedule; however, they will need to be available (occasionally in-person) for regular meetings with the Managing Director, other Green Owl staff and contractors, and/or clients.

This position requires frequent computer and some phone usage. (The Staff Accountant will be eligible for a partial telecommunications reimbursement.) While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to operate a computer and participate in phone conversations for long periods at a time.
